ABOUT L-AIR L-AIRとは？
「 L - A (ARTIST) I (IN) R (RESIDENCE) 」(一般社団法人エルエアー)は伝統ある姫路の皮革を通じた芸術や表現が、人と人とのつながりや歴史背景など、あらゆるものを超えた人間同士のより深いつながり文化の継承を実践する目的で2024年設立いたしました。
"L - A (ARTIST) I (IN) R (RESIDENCE)" (L-Air General Incorporated Association) is a company where art and expression through the traditional leather of Himeji transcends everything, such as connections between people and historical background. It was established in 2024 with the purpose of practicing the inheritance of a culture of deeper connections between people.
未来の変化に向き合い、これから求められる価値を生み出すために私たちに必要なのは、今目の前にあるものに丁寧に手を加え、そこから新しい何かを生み出す「鞣」的なマインドセットではないでしょうか。
「鞣す」ということは、その文字のとおり、「革」を「柔」らかくすることです。鞣しの工程を経ることにより、なめらかで柔らかく、耐久性のある「革」へと変身します。つまり、鞣しという行為は、生の素材に技術と工夫を加えることで、その存在を昇華させ、新しいマテリアルを生み出すことです。私たちは、この「鞣す」という行為を、技術と工夫で新しい価値を生み出すための、より広義なコンセプトとして捉え直そうと思います。
分野を超えたアーティストやクリエイター達と共に、“皮革”という素材と、“鞣”的アプローチで、新たな表現方法や産業の未来を模索してくださるアーティストを募集します。
In order to face the changes of the future and create the value that will be required in the future, what we need is a "tanner" mindset that carefully modifies what is in front of us and creates something new from it. Isn't it a set?
As the name suggests, "tanning" means making leather "soft". Through the tanning process, it is transformed into smooth, soft, and durable leather. In other words, the act of tanning is the process of adding technology and ingenuity to raw materials to sublimate their existence and create new materials. We would like to reconsider the act of "tanning" as a broader concept for creating new value through technology and ingenuity.
We are looking for artists who will explore new ways of expression and the future of industry by using the material "leather" and the approach of "tanning" together with artists and creators from different fields.
一般社団法人 L-AIRとは？
日本三大皮革産地のひとつである、兵庫県姫路市。その歴史は1000年以上前、平安時代にも遡ると言われています。日本で生産される革の約7割がここ姫路で作られています。そこで、姫路の皮革産地エリア高木を舞台にした、新しいアーティスト・イン・レジデンスの取り組みを一般社団法人L-AIRは始めます。
Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture is one of Japan's three major leather producing areas. Its history is said to date back more than 1,000 years, to the Heian period. Approximately 70% of the leather produced in Japan is made here in Himeji. Therefore, L-AIR, a general incorporated association, is starting a new artist-in-residence initiative set in Takagi, the leather-producing area of Himeji.
姫路市高木エリア
姫路市東北部に位置する高木エリアは、市川という穏やかな流水と流域の地下水が皮革の製造に適していたことに加え、広い河原があったことから、皮革の街として古くから親しまれてきました。この地での革づくりは平安時代の文献にも記述されており、1000年以上の歴史を持ちます。
現代では多くのタンナー（製革工場）で工業化された皮革生産が行われており、靴や鞄などファッションに用いられる皮革から、家具などに用いられる皮革に加え、皮革生産時に抽出されるコラーゲンに至るまで、環境に配慮した形で生産が行われています。国内外のブランドや多くの企業へ高品質の皮革等を供給する現場でありながら、近年では世代交代や、生産機材の進歩から、地域内に空き工場が点在しています。L-AIRでは、芸術を介した地域活性化にも取り組んでいきたいと考えています。
The Takagi area, located in the northeastern part of Himeji City, has been popular as a leather town for a long time because the calm flowing water of the Ichikawa River and the groundwater in the basin were suitable for leather production, and there was a wide riverbed. I'm here. Leather making in this area is also described in documents from the Heian period, and has a history of over 1000 years.
Nowadays, industrialized leather production is carried out in many tanneries (tanner factories), from leather used for fashion such as shoes and bags to leather used for furniture, etc. Production is carried out in an environmentally friendly manner, right down to the collagen extracted during production. Although it is a site that supplies high-quality leather and other products to many domestic and international brands and companies, in recent years, due to generational changes and advancements in production equipment, vacant factories are scattered throughout the area. At L-AIR, we would like to work on regional revitalization through art.
