During this residency, I had many “first encounters.”
First, with leather as a material.
With many tanners.
With everyone at L-AIR.
With the town of Himeji.
And with new developments in my own work.
Before the residency began, I had a general idea of how I would use leather—for example, “I will use leather for this particular part of this motif.”
However, once I actually began working with a wide variety of leathers, the inspiration I received from them was far more powerful than I had imagined. Rather than trying to fit the leather into forms I had already envisioned, I changed my approach and began to connect the sensations I experienced through the leather itself directly to my work.
What particularly fascinated me was the translucency of rawhide. It made me think of cicada wings, and through repeated experimentation, I was ultimately able to create a work combining rawhide with wood carving, a practice I have continued over the years.
I feel that the completed work has an atmosphere that was not present in my previous works.
Even though it is my own work, I felt once again that I was encountering it for the first time.
There are still so many things I want to experiment with and so many things I want to create.
I would like to continue working with leather, learning more about its characteristics and discovering more of its potential and appeal.
I am deeply grateful for all the “first encounters” I experienced during this residency.
