エルエアで滞在制作を行ったアーティストからの寄稿文を紹介します。今回の記事は2026年1月5日（月）から 3月29日（日）の期間中滞在した靴職人のアマラ・ハーク=ウェバー(Amara Hark-Weber)さん。
3ヶ月の滞在を経てアーティストの見たものや感じたこと――
姫路で過ごした時間は、考え、実験し、学ぶための余白を与えてくれました。到着したとき、何を制作するのかはまだ分かっていませんでした。最初は挑戦でもありました。新しい環境の中で、学ぶべきことがたくさんありました。新しい素材に出会うだけでなく、日本での日常生活についても学びました。滞在中はひたむきに制作に取り組み、スタジオでの時間から生まれるものに対して常に開かれていたい、というのが目標でした。
日々のルーティンができてくると、その環境そのものを制作のインスピレーションとして取り入れるようになりました。隣接するタンナーの仕事を、見て、匂いを感じ、音を聞き、触れることができた経験はとても強いものでした。観察することを通して学び、そこで作られる多様な革素材を実際に使うことで理解を深めました。
また、同じアーティストの小林明日香さんからも多くのことを学びました。来日当初、バスの乗り方や食料品店の場所など、基本的なことを教えてくれ、とても助けてくれました。お互いを知る中で、一緒に姫路やその周辺を探索するようにもなりました。彼女の親しみやすく協力的な姿勢に感謝しており、日本についても多くのことを学びました。
3か月の制作を終えて、自分が作り上げたものに驚きと誇りを感じています。それはこれまでの自分の作品とはまったく異なるものでした。滞在中は時に大変なこともありましたが、この経験を通して大きく成長することができましたし、L-AIRのスタッフの支えに心から感謝しています。
Being in Himeji gave me space to think, to experiment, and to learn. I was not sure what I would make when I arrived. At first it was a challenge. Being in a new environment there was a lot to learn. There were new materials, but also learning about daily life in Japan. My goal was to work diligently throughout the time, and be open to whatever came from my time in the studio.
As I established a daily routine, I used the setting as inspiration for my work. Seeing, smelling, hearing, touching the work of our tannery neighbors was incredibly powerful. I learned by watching, and using the many new leathers that were being made.
I also learned a lot from my fellow artist Kobayaski-Asuka. She help me a lot at the beginning as I learned basic things such as how to ride the bus and where to go grocery shopping. As we got to know each other, we ventured out together to explore Himeji and the surroundings. I was grateful for her friendly and helpful attitude, and learned a lot about Japan from her.
After three months of working, I was surprised and proud of what I had made. It was totally different from anything I’ve made before. While the residency was challenging at times, I grew so much from the experience, and am grateful to the staff at L_AIR for their support.
