L-AIR (Artists in Residence) was established with the aim of practicing the inheritance of a culture in which art and expression through leather transcends all kinds of human ties and historical backgrounds to create a deeper connection between people.
Invited artists will receive full support for their art creation, including field research on leather, skills learning and support during creation. |

Production or expression of art and design works using leather, a traditional industry.
- Artists, designers and creators (adults only) working individually or in duos.
- Any age, nationality or background is welcome.
- No previous knowledge or experience of leather is required.
- You are also willing to collaborate with leather producers and interact with the local community.
- Openness to the process and willingness to communicate on social networking sites.
- Those who can participate in activity debriefings and regular meetings during the period.
- Those who are able to stay for 3 months (basically throughout the period).
In the first year, priority is mainly given to applications from the following fields.

Various production equipment is available in the studio or at a nearby facility. Please ask for details when applying. If you need to bring your own equipment, please let us know at the time of application.

Support is provided for the following phases of the leather-specific art programme

Field research
We will conduct field research in the area and visit factories and workshops. We first go into the area and identify the challenges and inspirational elements.

Skills learning
Coaching is provided in a tannery by a leather manufacturer.

Exhibition preparation and production
Production will be undertaken in preparation for the final exhibition. This will be done in collaboration with local collaborators and others as required.

Final exhibition
An exhibition of the results will be held around the exhibition site. The form of the output, such as research exhibition, artwork exhibition, workshops, talk events, tours, etc., will be decided and carried out after consultation.

- Individuals and groups of artists and designers in various fields who are currently active and involved in artistic expression. (Any genre, hereafter referred to as artists etc.).
- Applicants must understand the objectives of the programmed and be able to stay and participate in L-AIR for the duration of the invitation period.
- During their stay, the artists must organize monthly open studios and final report exhibitions, as well as exchange programmed such as talks, lectures, performances/performances, workshops, school visits, etc.
- The applicant must be able to conduct the above exchange programmed in English or Japanese.
- Be in good health.
- At least a basic understanding of English for daily conversation.
- Work with L-AIR staff (including volunteer staff) to set up and take down the exhibition and events.
- Be able to live together with other artists and others during the period of the residency (if you need support with this, please contact us in advance).
- Contribute at least one piece of creative work or documentary film to L-AIR as archive.
- Contribute an essay after the residency.

The secretariat will make a comprehensive judgment on the purpose and content of the applied project, the specifics of the deliverables and the motivation for participation, and will notify the applicant by e-mail within one week after the end of the application period.

- Selection process
- Selection will be made by a panel of L-AIR directors, project producers and curators based on the submitted materials.
