■Biography
Before 2017 — Worked with sculpture, wood carving, and object design.
2017 — Began studying leatherwork in Saint Petersburg with his father, Sergey Rabetskii, an artist and sculptor, and continued developing his practice independently.
2017–present — Developed his own artistic style in leather, transforming the material into expressive sculptural forms reminiscent of living creatures.
2018–2024 — Created and sold original leather works to different parts of the world, from European countries to Australia.
2018–2024 — Works acquired by private collectors in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
2018–2024 — Participated in the Artflection Craft Festivals in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
2018–2024 — Received invitations to conduct leatherworking workshops abroad.
Recent years — Shifted toward a more experimental and research-based practice, exploring leather as a sculptural material.

■Artist Statement
I work primarily with leather, creating objects that exist between sculpture and function.

My practice began with functional objects such as bags and backpacks, but gradually developed toward more sculptural and experimental forms. I am interested in how an everyday object can change through shape, texture, and material until it begins to suggest something living.

I form, layer, dye, and finish leather by hand. Through this process, the material can resemble skin, bone, scales, wings, or other organic structures. Many of my works take inspiration from creatures, both real and imagined.

Leather is important to me because it is a material that continues to change. It softens, darkens, develops a patina, and records traces of touch and use. I do not try to completely control these changes. Irregularities, visible handwork, asymmetry, and aging often become part of the finished object.

In recent years, my practice has become increasingly focused on material research and on the relationship between the object and the body. I am interested in creating works that can still be touched, carried, or worn, while also existing as sculptural forms.

I often think of these objects as “sculptures you wear” — functional forms that gradually acquire their own character and presence.

■Motivation for Participating in L-AIR
I am looking forward to the opportunity to begin my creative work in a new environment in Himeji, Japan. I would like to see the local leather production, discover unusual types of leather and different tanning and finishing techniques, and immerse myself in the history and context of leather craftsmanship in Himeji and Hyogo Prefecture, as well as in Japan more broadly.

I would like to see the local leather production, discover unusual types of leather and different tanning and finishing techniques, and immerse myself in the history and context of leathercraft in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, and in Japan as a whole.

In everyday life, a tactile way of perceiving the world is very important to me, and leather, as my main creative material, feels especially natural in this sense. Leather is always different — in its texture, grain, oil content, density, thickness, flexibility, and many other qualities. I take great pleasure in selecting leather and combining different types, colours, textures, and even scents. I genuinely love working with this material.

For me, leather is something between wood and natural clay. It is flexible and malleable like clay, while at the same time warm and resilient like wood. I find this combination of qualities unique.

During the residency, I would like to understand and absorb the history and context of the region more deeply, and create works that reflect the local traditions of leather production and leatherworking while combining them with my own artistic style.

I would like to share with the local community the story that unfolds over these three months.

Of course, this will include sketches, prototypes, and finished works, but I also hope to show how the project changes throughout the process — how it develops through unexpected ideas, materials, and details inspired by local craftspeople and cultural heritage.

I would like to share with the local community not only the finished works, but an engaging story of exchange made possible by L-AIR – between an artist from far away and the people, materials, and ideas of this place – and how these encounters gradually shaped something that could only have emerged here.

Thank you very much for this opportunity. I am sincerely looking forward to the experience and to meeting everyone in Himeji.
